Hey Tilly,

I'm going to let you in on my rule of thumb: don't buy cheap computers. If you can't afford one, just hold off. When people buy cheap computers they have this vision that it'll last 4-6 years like any good computer. What they fail to realize is that either it will be obsolete in 2 years or you'll get so pissed with its problems that you'll make it obsolete in 2 years :-P

In my experience, the computers that are built well last a lot long because of quality and also because they use current technology. I cannot tell you how many crappy Gateways and Compaqs I've had to help people with.

I've had my Dell desktop for at least 4 years and it still works very well (though I'm upgrading to a laptop in a few months).

I've found that good desktops start at $700 USD and good desktops start at a couple hundred more. Having name brand parts is key. The off brands cut costs in a way that will cost you dearly before long. It's not like buying Coke and the knock off Coke, it's like buying a condo or buying a shanty on the side of the road.

As for Macs: don't be that jealous ;-) It's just a Mac! We all want them because of how good Steve Jobs makes them look. They're clearly way overpriced. Plus, there's a new one every few months, and because of the way Apple runs things you can never get a discount either.

I think I've heard of Asus Eee if it's their super thin computer, and others have written comparisons of it and Air. I just wanted to point out the good and bad independent of any comparison.

I think my class is starting soon (I'm on my phone), so take care! :)
